Our Curriculum: the intent behind all of our learning
All decisions made in planning the curriculum are made in the best interests of the child. Our curriculum intent is for all learning to be:
- Engaging: Our intention is that children enjoy their learning and embrace challenge. Through high levels of engagement children can flourish, reaching and exceeding their potential academically, physically and creatively. We believe in bringing learning to life, both indoors and out, with an emphasis on engaging and purposeful learning. Learning outdoors is an integral feature of our curriculum
- Enriching: Our truly unique curriculum enriches children deeply. Our curriculum is enriched in a variety of ways: trips; visitors; real world contexts; innovative, stimulating and inspiring experiences; strong and meaningful cross-curricular links; purposeful use of the environment; and pupil and staff collaboration.
- Value-centred: our Epsom Downs values - Respect, Resilience, Empathy, Self-Awareness, Positivity, Excellence, Communication and Teamwork - and British values underpin all that we teach and all the learning opportunities that are planned for. This supports children to develop a moral compass and a rich understanding of themselves and others; one that prepares them for life in the modern world and gives them the capacity to thrive, understanding and respecting the cultures of others within a diverse and ever-changing world.
- Language rich: A wide use of vocabulary will support the literacy and communication key life skills that are woven throughout all other subjects in our school. Developing our children’s application of language is crucial to a high-quality education and will give our children the tools they need to participate fully as a member of society.
