Epsom Downs Primary School & Children's Cnetre

Maths

Curriculum Overview

At Epsom Downs we follow the National Curriculum. White Rose planning is followed to support the planning of maths from Year 1 – 6. I See Maths is used to develop reasoning and problem solving. Children are given concrete experiences through using a range of manipulatives that enable the children to create visual images. The children are taught specific mathematical vocabulary and given opportunities to apply this language with the support of stem sentences.

Children spend an hour per day developing their mathematical skills within lessons. In addition, the children review previously-learnt skills through daily practice using Flashback Fours which are separate to their maths lessons.

Our Progression of Skills outlines the way in which we teach calculation and how skills are built upon throughout the school. This enables the children to become fluent in mathematics, reason and solve problems.

We recognise that maths should be taught in a practical, creative and meaningful way, linked to everyday life and therefore ensure that it is linked to year group topics, making use of the outdoors wherever possible.

Mathletics

We subscribe to Mathletics, to reinforce mathematical learning at school and at home. Tasks are set by the class teacher and then children are able to play against each other on live Mathletics.

Children are able to access Mathletics via their Google and Wonde logins. Children can gain bronze, silver and gold certificates weekly.

Times Tables

We subscribe to Times table Rockstars to support the learning of times tables.  Children are expected to practise their times tables weekly as part of their home learning. Children are able to access Times table Rockstars via their Google and Wonde logins.
